Capturing the Perfect Reaction: Tips for Engagement Photography
At Kelly Tareski Photography, we know that engagement photos are a pivotal moment in a couple’s journey. These images capture the excitement and love before the big day, creating lasting memories.
Our photography education has taught us that the key to stunning engagement shots lies in three crucial elements: location, equipment, and direction. In this post, we’ll share our top tips for mastering these aspects and capturing those perfect, genuine reactions.
Choosing a photo location for your engagement session that is in some way significant to you helps to further capture and tell your unique story. These personal touches add depth to the photos and help tell a unique love story. The familiar environment helps them relax, resulting in natural, joyful shots.
Professional photographers scout potential locations before any shoot. This practice identifies the best angles, lighting conditions, and potential challenges. They look for varied backdrops within a single location – perhaps a mix of urban and natural elements. Spokane’s Riverfront Park, for instance, offers a fantastic blend of architectural features and lush greenery, providing diverse options for engagement shoots.
While outdoor locations often provide beautiful natural light and scenery, indoor options shouldn’t be discounted. A mix of both can add variety to a photo collection. Indoor locations (like art galleries or cozy cafes) can create intimate, stylized shots, while outdoor settings offer a more relaxed, natural feel. Many photographers find that starting indoors and moving outdoors as the session progresses often helps couples ease into the shoot.
The time of day chosen for a shoot dramatically affects the quality of light and, consequently, the photos. Most photographers recommend scheduling sessions during the “golden hour” – the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the light is soft and warm. However, each location has its own optimal time. High noon is the only time of day that there will be absolutely no angle to the sun, but if you’re at least 30 minutes on either side of that, you can take advantage of different lighting conditions.
The perfect location combines personal meaning, aesthetic appeal, and practical considerations. A carefully selected and scouted engagement photo spot sets the stage for capturing those genuine, heartfelt reactions that make truly unforgettable images. Now, let’s explore the essential equipment needed to bring these perfect locations to life through the lens.
At Kelly Tareski Photography, we know that the right gear plays a vital role in capturing perfect engagement moments. Our 20 years of experience have taught us that versatility is essential when it comes to equipment.
For engagement shoots, we use full-frame DSLR or mirrorless cameras. These provide excellent image quality and perform well in various lighting conditions. The Canon EOS R5 and Sony A7 III are popular choices among professional photographers.
A 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom lens is our go-to for its versatility. It allows for both wide-angle shots to capture the environment and closer portraits. For those dreamy, bokeh-filled shots, an 85mm f/1.4 prime lens is unbeatable. The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art lens offers stunning sharpness and beautiful background blur.
Natural light is often preferred for engagement shoots. When using natural light, look for a spot between you and the sun that has trees behind it, and place yourself where the sun is peeking through the trees. Additional lighting gear is also essential. A portable flash unit (like the Godox V1) can fill in shadows or add a creative touch to your images. For indoor shoots or when the sun sets, LED panels (such as the Aputure AL-MX) provide continuous, adjustable lighting.
Light modifiers are also important. A collapsible reflector can bounce light to soften shadows, while a small softbox can create beautiful, diffused light for close-up portraits.
Props can add personality to engagement photos. It’s important to use them sparingly and ensure they’re meaningful to the couple. A bottle of champagne, a cozy blanket, or even the couple’s pet can create unique and personal shots.
Some photographers carry a “styling kit” with items like ribbon, fairy lights, or seasonal decorations. These can add a touch of whimsy or romance to the images without overpowering the couple’s connection.
Equipment failure can ruin a shoot. Always carry backup batteries, memory cards, and if possible, a second camera body. A portable power bank can be a lifesaver for longer outdoor sessions.
Weather-proofing your gear is also important. A simple rain cover for your camera can save the day if unexpected showers roll in during an outdoor shoot.
While having the right equipment is important, your skill and creativity as a photographer truly bring engagement photos to life. The best gear in the world can’t replace the ability to connect with your clients and capture genuine moments of love and joy. Now that we’ve covered the essential equipment, let’s explore how to use these tools effectively to capture those perfect reactions in engagement photography.
The foundation of capturing authentic emotions starts with making couples feel at ease. We begin each session with a casual conversation, learning about the couple’s story. This approach breaks the ice and builds trust, allowing them to relax in front of the camera.
Playing music during the shoot can significantly enhance the mood. A study by the University of Missouri found that music can boost mood and reduce anxiety. We encourage couples to create a playlist of their favorite songs to play during the session, which often leads to spontaneous dancing and laughter.
Traditional posing often feels stiff and unnatural. Instead, we use prompts to encourage natural interactions. For example, we might ask the couple to whisper their favorite thing about each other or share a funny memory from their relationship. These prompts often result in genuine smiles, laughter, and tender moments that make for stunning photographs.
A popular prompt is the “trust fall.” One partner closes their eyes and falls back into the other’s arms. This not only creates a dynamic image but also evokes real emotions of trust and care between the couple.
Static poses can feel unnatural. We add movement into our shoots to capture more dynamic and authentic images. One of the best ways to introduce motion into your session is to have your couple take a walk. These activities not only create interesting compositions but also help the couple forget about the camera, resulting in more natural expressions.
A study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found that physical movement can enhance positive emotions. This effect is evident in engagement sessions, where couples who engage in active prompts often appear more relaxed and joyful in their photos.
While we focus on capturing genuine reactions, we also understand the importance of including some classic, posed shots. We typically start with a few traditional poses to help the couple get comfortable in front of the camera. As the session progresses, we transition to more candid and interactive prompts.
Alternating between posed and candid shots throughout the session keeps the energy high and prevents the couple from feeling overwhelmed or self-conscious. This approach allows us to deliver a diverse gallery of images that captures both the elegance and the spontaneity of the couple’s relationship.
Engagement photography combines technical skill, creative vision, and interpersonal finesse. The perfect engagement shoot depends on the right location, appropriate equipment, and masterful direction. These elements set the stage for capturing genuine emotions that transform photographs into cherished memories.
Our photography education has taught us that evoking authentic reactions requires more than technical proficiency. It demands empathy, creativity, and a keen eye for fleeting moments of connection.
